So You Want to be an Interpreter? Working in Education.

Sign language interpreters are often the silent heroes in the classroom.  That is how many interpreters prefer it, although they certainly could use more help on their team.  The job is not easy, it is as under compensated as any other teaching job in America, but it is very rewarding emotionally.  Sign language interpreters need to exhibit a high level of efficiency and competency in the English language, but on a different level of agility and flexibility than most traditional forms of interpreting. 

Big Responsibilities

Being a sign language interpreter is a hard enough job, however, interpreting for younger ages, like teenagers and adolescents puts even more stress on the position.  It’s not only important for the interpreter to give quick, accurate interpretation, but they must also be depended on for the cognitive and social development during the most crucial moments of their lives.  A child’s sign language interpreter can in many ways become their mentor or second parent because of the amount of time they spend together and the close contact they will have with them.

With all of this said, sign language interpreters are essentially left to their own devices once they successfully graduate to the stage of completion.  They must learn to navigate the classroom and the individual student’s personality.  It becomes a balancing act of being professional and serious about learning, but approachable and kind enough so that you don’t frustrate the children who already have to do deal with more adversity than most other students can’t even imagine.

Interpreters for the Future

As technology has improved in the field of cochlear implants, making it both more affordable and more effective, the need for sign language interpreters in the classroom will only continue to grow.  This is going to become a new and exciting career for many interpreters in the future, many believe.  It’s challenging for both the interpreter and the student, as there is no official rulebook (as of written yet).  The interpreter isn’t limited to rigid curriculum that must be applied to every student they work with, as witnessed more with foreign language or ESL studies.  

As a matter of fact, sign language itself can be learned much more easily than any other language course.  This is in despite of the fact that many colleges and universities accept sign language as a foreign language credit.  Kids in high school can actually take sign language classes and feel confident with using it after only a few classes.  It is often agreed that foreign languages become increasingly difficult to grasp after a certain age, usually no later than the start of middle school.

If more high schools and colleges offer sign language courses, this can really create a big wave in the deaf community and potentially improve the overall quality of life.  Not just in a numbers perspective, but also in efficiency.  They say that the best sign language interpreters in the education field is one that is the most socially and culturally competent.

Attention to Detail is Important

People are social creatures and social advancement is key for an adolescent’s prosperity. Being in a general instruction classroom with an interpreter can have significant consequences for a child’s social improvement. 

It is essential that the group of instructors consider whether the instructive position gives chances for social association and the advancement of friendships. This focusing on interpreting incorporates a few parts of instruction where interpreting and social advancement are cohesive. 

A sign language interpreter’s training works for some personalities, however, not for all.  Also, some interpreted circumstances are more fruitful than others.  Case in point, not all instructors are going to work in unison with an interpreter’s abilities – a teacher’s varying styles can make deciphering troublesome. It takes a determined team of instructors to get the most out of their students. 

When assessing a sign language interpreter’s position, it is fundamental to look past the scholarly metrics.  Social association, strength of compatibility, relationships with associates, and access to the whole classroom, are additionally key elements in any instructive framework.  Children who are hard of hearing or deaf need to have reliable, credible individuals from the classroom, that have the capacity to: 

  • Take an interest in classroom exchanges 
  • Take an interest in a group setting 
  • Know how to be a mediator to get into discussions 
  • Take part in transaction, verbal confrontation, support, and different types of complex talk 

Sign language interpreters are not just limited to the classroom lectures, of course, they will travel with the students, to be able to provide assistance in all the various school activities.  This is why it is so important for the student to feel comfortable with their interpreter.  This is especially true for older students in high school.  Miscommunication is so common, even if you have perfect sight and hearing, it can seem like being in a vacuum of mixed signals and misunderstandings all throughout those teenage years.  A sign language interpreter can help children through the most trying times in their lives.
